@NGIZero “Open Source” for a surveillance capitalist like Google is one or several of four main things:

- The potential to use free labour
- The potential for positive public relations (which, when amplified, will hopefully get people thinking about them as a benevolent philosopher kings instead of the robber barons and people farmers that they are)
- The potential to influence the stack (with tools that function in line with their success criteria)
- The potential to find new talent

How useful is the federated timeline on your instance?
(Or if you have multiple accounts, on the largest instance you use)

"Firefox won't work unless you enable...."
It has been a while since I have seen this (inaccurate) message for any app.

First time I've seen it for and it happens as a result of opening a github link to unsub from a repo somebody subbed me to.
Does anybody know what is happening here?

@swansinflight@mastodon.nz @wolf480pl

I wonder if one could still move away a little more from the previous toxic behaviour of "social" media on fediverse.

* One might question the concept of blocking people, In fact you are blocking accounts (that may not really be people).
* I do wonder about the use value of the federated timeline. Blocking accounts might be a way to have your timelines be happier places.
* Muting those that respond with noise to threads you end up on might work better than blocking?

What #education did you do for free software and people in your country?

Please share your experience.

Boosts are very appreciated.

People who think "Open Source is thriving, it's everywhere!" and are all optimistic about it are doing the same thing as the people with electric cars and solar panels on their McMansions thinking that we're on track to deal with the climate crisis.

The *real* solutions for a healthy sustainable FLO world are all still marginalized and struggling, and the capitalist #greenwashing and #openwashing serve mainly to delude people about the state of things.

@emacsen

Your post makes me realise how little I have poked around in the mastodon backend. I didn't even know for example how the links to toots (on the minutes/hours/etc ago) top right are formed, but I see they are in the uri column of the statuses table. So, maybe you could do some fancy redirection on your new emacsen.net to urls that should go to mastodon, like /users/emacsen/statuses/*. I don't suppose that would conflict with any of your new content.

@emacsen
Do you want to change your username, or just the address of the (web interface) of the instance?

I would have thought if you do not want/need to change the username, then it just works with a redirect in emacsen.net/.well-known/host-m to mastodon.emacsen.net/.well-kno but, I also would have thought there's people better versed in activitypub than me on the thread.

Is there a name for this rhetorical trick?

1. A writer asserts that "anyone who still uses two spaces after a full stop is abusing the language."
2. The writer notes that their target "is one of those people who still uses two spaces."
3. From that point, the author and all their fans describe the target as "an abuser" and their work as "abusive" without clarification.
4. Anyone who tries to clarify is described as "an apologist for abusers".

I feel there has to be but can't think of it.

Indeed. This seems just like crazy to me. Total opposite of that seems to be the positive influence of basing the SDO's effort around an OSS core. Have transparency be at the heart of the standardization effort, and level playing field for anyone to contribute to that discussing in all openness.

These papers are sort of eye-opener for me, as for the kind of "substrate formation" that is needed for a healthy Fediverse.

The new joinmastodon.org website delivered by @oakstudios is live (has been for a little while, actually, but I've been working on it still). I think it's the best it's ever been. Check out the branding and about pages too!

As you might have seen from the last boost, PeerTube's latest version now supports "ability to automatically import all videos from a remote channel (from another video platform)".

What does this mean?

It means you can automatically import your videos from YouTube to PeerTube 🥳

Trying hard to wrap my head around this one:

"If an SDO’s OSS project becomes fundamental to the way standards are implemented in the marketplace, the lack of participation from these innovators may (i) deprive the community of valuable contributions, and (ii) skew the resulting SDO-approved OSS implementation in a way that is no longer vendor neutral."

I wonder what counts as participation and contribution in the mind of the writer. Only €€€ ?

I just noticed crawling one of my servers. Any readers of this using it?

"Two months after Trump launched Truth Social, the European Union followed suit...."

The way the presentation of this information on the EU Mastodon projects was phrased is bizarre, vaguely slanderous.

There is an agenda behind this piece but I'm not sure what it is. I'm not convinced that Michael del Castillo of Forbes staff knows what it is either.

@Blort @EC_NGI @cwebber @NGIZero

I do notice over the past few years that whenever "rabble" is a feature of a mainstream media piece, it is not short of inaccuracies, and has left me wondering what he is actually up to, if anything at all other than providing click-bait headlines.
